What is Paprika 4, and does it change the comparison?

Paprika 4 is in open beta as of September 28, 2026. Paprika's news post lists photo scanning, social media import from TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, cookbooks, family sharing for up to five members and Alexa support. All of these are marked premium and will need a subscription after the beta, whose price Paprika's site does not list.

Paprika's guide says Paprika is now free to download on all platforms and you no longer buy each version separately. It also says Paprika 4 replaces Paprika 3 on a device as an in-place upgrade. If you choose today, the stores still sell Paprika 3, and the table marks which Paprika features belong to Paprika 3 and which to the Paprika 4 beta.

The beta overlaps with parts of what Chefless does. Paprika 4 lists family sharing, photo scanning and social import, and Chefless offers those in different forms: a Kitchen with suggestions and approvals, photo and caption import, and a feed of other cooks. Paprika's desktop apps, the one-time purchase of Paprika 3 and its 16 languages remain real strengths.

Who is Paprika better for?

Paprika is better if you want to pay once, use a Mac or Windows computer, keep recipes on your own device, print or export them, or use the app in German, French, Italian, Japanese or another of its 16 languages. Its pantry tracks quantities and expiry dates, and Paprika 4 adds family sharing for up to five people.

  • Paying once. Paprika 3 is a one-time purchase per platform, while Paprika 4's premium features need a subscription after the beta.
  • Desktop apps. Paprika runs on Mac and Windows, and Chefless does not.
  • Your own copy. Paprika keeps data on the device and exports recipes as HTML or in the Paprika Recipe Format.
  • Print and calendars. Paprika prints recipes, lists, menus and plans, and exports meal plans to Calendar on iPhone.
  • A large archive from websites. Its built-in browser and bookmarklet are made for clipping recipes from the web.

Who is Chefless better for?

Chefless is better for a household on iPhone and Android that wants one shared calendar and shopping list, where members suggest meals and a lead approves. It also suits people who cook in Arabic or Turkish, want to follow other cooks, or want a free plan to start with.

  • A shared plan. Members suggest meals, the Head Chef approves, and everyone sees the same meal calendar and shopping list.
  • Cooking together. Planned leftovers, servings per meal and a Tonight widget on iPhone and Android.
  • Other cooks. Follow people, browse feeds, rate recipes and post what you cooked, or keep your recipes private.
  • Arabic and Turkish. The app works in English, Arabic, Spanish and Turkish.
  • A free start. No payment and no ads, with a free plan of five recipes and a Kitchen of two. Recipe import reads links, captions, text and photos.

Chefless has no desktop or web app, no printing or file export, and its free plan holds five recipes.

Can I use Paprika and Chefless together?

Yes. They do different jobs, and nothing stops you from keeping a large archive in Paprika and planning with your household in Chefless. Chefless cannot read a Paprika export file today, so recipes move over as a link, as pasted text, or as up to four photos or screenshots at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Does Paprika work offline?

Yes. Paprika's Windows page says it stores your data on your computer, so no internet connection is needed to view recipes, and its iPhone and iPad listing says the same. Chefless opens with what you saw last when you are offline and keeps Cook mode steps and timers on the phone, but most other screens need a connection.

Can two people share one Paprika account?

In Paprika 3, one Paprika Cloud Sync account covers every device that shares a recipe collection, so partners share one login. The Paprika 4 beta adds family sharing for up to five members with their own logins, as a premium feature. Chefless uses a Kitchen: free for two members, unlimited in a Kitchen led by a Chefless Premium account.

Is there a free alternative to Paprika?

Chefless is free to download. Its free plan holds up to five recipes, one cookbook and a Kitchen of two people, with planning from two days before today to two days after. A larger collection or a full calendar needs Chefless Premium. Paprika 3 for Windows has a free trial limited to 50 recipes with no cloud sync.

Can I move my recipes from Paprika to Chefless?

Chefless cannot import a Paprika export file today. Open each recipe you want and bring it in as a link, as pasted text, or as up to four photos or screenshots at a time. Paprika exports recipes as HTML or in the Paprika Recipe Format, so you can keep a full backup there.

Which app is better for recipes I save from Instagram and TikTok?

The Paprika 4 beta lists social media import from TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube as a premium feature. Chefless imports a public social post when its caption holds the recipe, or pasted caption text or a screenshot, and it does not watch videos or listen to audio. Both are free to try, so test them with your own saves.
